Canoe overnighter with the kids.

This time of the year always seems to pass to fast. So much to see, discover and enjoy, and so little time. The weekends seem to be full of other stuff, and suddenly it's Midsummer, after which the most interesting time in the nature is over, at least from my point of view. I would have liked to relax and do something on my own this weekend, after the intensive course last week. A look in the calender revealed that the number of free weekends is very limited, though, so I found myself going on an overnighter with the kids. It's something I want to do, since it is fun and rewarding. It is however not entirely relaxing...


I packed the stuff and put the canoe on the car roof and we drove for a while, before packing everything up and starting. The weather forecast mentioned nice and sunny weather and a weakening wind. It was wrong. The wind was stronger than forecasted and we even got some rain after while.

Checking out a possible tent island, which was quite nice.

 Despite the winter ending in February, summer is late. Not all trees have leaves yet.

The blueberries are coming along nicely.

This common gull has chosen a rather small place for its nest.

We went back to the first island, but found that it was occupied by some people drinking beer and grilling sausage. Fortunately finding an alternate place wasn't hard.

Trying my new Solo Stove Campfire for the first time. It was much easier to use than my smaller Bushcooker, since it can take a lot bigger pieces of wood, of which there is no shortage on the ground.

A worthy first meal is pancakes.

Sunset was at 22:25.

The night was nice with a multitude of bird sounds and almost no wind. The morning started nice and sunny.

The embers are hot enough to be able to toast sandwhiches. I just have to get a suitable mesh for it.

On the move again. I had just packed the tent when it started raining.

Back at the starting point. With most of the stuff in Ikea bags, unloading the canoe is easy. And the Ally canoe is light enough (20 kg) that it is easy to carry to the car,

That's it. These small overnighters cram a lot into quite little time and the kids don't necessarily need longer trips yet.
