Aquarius Sea Lion kayak one year review

This review is an updated version of my initial review from earlier this year. I think it is motivated to update it, since fairly little information is found on the web about this particular kayak. It has gained at least some popularity in Finland, along with the kayaks of another Polish manufacturer, Kayman kayaks. At the Hanko Sea Kayak Gathering in August I saw about five other Aquarius Sea Lions.

At the time writing I have a little over a year and around 1100 km of paddling with the Sea Lion during fall, winter, spring and summer in different conditions, in winds up to a little over 10 m/s and waves up to 1.5 m as well as a number of overnighters and three week-long trips. I now think I have a pretty well founded view of it to offer.




Overview

The Aquarius Sea Lion is a Polish manufactured British style kayak made in light composite materials. The dimensions are as follows (taken from the manufacturer's page):

My version is the Club+ one and I can confirm that it definitely is a lot lighter to carry than the typical 26-28 kg kayaks. I haven't weighed it, but have no reason to doubt the weight given by the manufacturer.

The dimensions, especially the width, put it clearly in the the performance category of kayaks, where the kayaks both need and reward active paddling.

Cockpit and fit

With my dimensions, 192 cm height and around 100 kg weight, there is a limited number of kayaks that actually fit me. On paper, the Sea Lion seemed too small for me, but it has turned out to be really suitable. The keyhole cockpit is narrow at the front, which gives more space inside the kayak, but it also means that the legs have to be moved passed it one at a time. The only thing I don't like about the cockpit opening is that it is too short to allow me the seat first legs later method of getting into the kayak without some additional gymnastics that need a little support. And when kayaking in Finland you want to get in and out of the kayak, since we have lots of islands to explore. Well inside the kayak, there is plenty of room, though. The foot pegs can be adjusted enough to give plenty of room length-wise (compared to e.g. the Tiderace Xplore L, which was too short for me). The thigh braces also fit perfectly, something I've also found to be a problem on many kayaks (e.g. the Valley Etain 17.7 RM had the thigh braces closer to the hips than the knees for me, as did the P&H Cetus HV). My shoes size is Euro 46 and I always use neoprene boots in the kayak. My feet fit fine in a V position, but there is no place for bigger boots. A little more space for the feet would be a good thing. The seat is very comfortable for me and allows a good body rotation despite being quite tight. Someone wider might not fit well, though. The seat had a padding, which I removed before even testing it, since I found no need for it. The seat sits higher than in some other kayaks, about 15 mm above the bottom at its lowest point, which probably affects the stability a bit. The backrest is a simple affair, but in a kayak of this type the main task of the backrest is to keep you in the correct position on the seat, and not to give much support for the back. I paddle with the legs slightly bent with a 7 cm thick paddle float under my knees and there is even a tad too much space upwards to the thigh braces for me. All-in-all, the fit for me is tight but comfortable for long hours in the kayak.

Equipment

The Sea Lion is equipped with a KajakSport skeg mechanism. The skeg control is at the left side, which is the correct place in countries where the right hand is used as the paddle control hand. It operates smoothly, but the skeg is fairly small. This far it has sufficed, but now and then all of it has to be deployed. The SmartTrack foot pegs can be adjusted while sitting in the kayak and this far have worked well. The kayak has four KajakSport hatches, all secured to the kayak, with a small hatch just in front of the cockpit and a slightly larger day hatch behind the cockpit to the right. The front hatch is round and the rear hatch is a big ovale one. All hatches have been tight. The deck fittings are recessed, and the rigging is acceptable with good grab lines in front of the cockpit. For rescues it would be important to have good grab lines around the entire kayak, but in this case the rigging is somewhat lacking behind the cockpit. A spare split paddle fit well on the foredeck with some additional lines. There is a compass recess at the front, which is a good position for a compass. The Silva 70P compass fit without bigger problems, but I had to carve away a few mm of plastic from it. The manufacturer offers several color schemes, and I really think the one I have makes for a very nice looking kayak.

The storage space is decent. This is not a high volume kayak, at least not in relation to my size, but the total waterproof cargo space of 190 liters is not bad. Part of it is wasted with the skeg box, though. A weekend trip is no problem, but a week-long trip needs careful packing, which is to be expected in an all-round kayak. The manufacturer gives no load limit for it, but I tested it with 28 kg of water (in containers) and would consider this pretty much the maximum load for the Sea Lion. It would make a total of about 150 kg (paddler + kayak + cargo). The kayak was a lot more stable with this cargo, but also turned more slowly and felt a little clumsy in the waves.

Maneuverability and stability

The Sea Lion has a fair amount of rocker and is hence very maneuverable with the skeg up. It carves turns nicely when edging it. The hull has a fairly shallow V in the middle and this flattish section makes it a good and willing surfer. The stability is predictable and quite decent. A 52 cm kayak for someone 192 cm tall with a high center of gravity doesn't have the total initial stability to allow letting go of the paddle all situations, and it certainly feels a lot less stable than the 59 cm wide Prijon Kodiak I had earlier. The initial stability is still ok and the secondary stability fairly solid, but there are definitely more stable kayaks out there. In waves it performs predictably and moves smoothly, without reacting too much to the waves, but you might not want to let go of the paddle for taking a picture. In 10 m/s wind and corresponding waves from behind or angled from behind needs a fair amount of bracing, at least for me (again, it is not an advantage to being tall when kayaking). The biggest waves have been fairly steep 1.5 m waves from the back, where bracing was definitely was required and care needed to prevent unwanted surfing. The Sea Lion definitely surfs well. It catches surfs easily, and even fully loaded surfs very well.

Speed

The kayak won't win any marathons, but I think it is pretty fast for a manouverable sea kayak.A cruising speed of 8 km/h goes with little effort and it is only after around 9 km/h that the drag starts to increase rapidly on flat water. It accelerates quickly, however, and the cruising speed is still higher than that of many other sea kayaks. Since the Sea Lion is fairly narrow, it can easily be paddled with a high style, especially since the sides are clearly slanted in front of the cockpit to make room for the paddling. The foredeck is also low enough for a low paddling style if needed and a Greenland paddle feels very right with this kayak.

Rolling

The back deck height is a compromise between cargo space and rolling height. It is low enough for getting the back down for an ordinary screw roll, but the most extreme Greenland style layback rolls might not work well. Still, the Sea Lion is quite easy to roll, check e.g. this video. The first outside roll of the season of my own can be seen in the following video (and it was only the second time I rolled this kayak). During the period with less cold water  (we didn't have warn water this summer) I probably did close to one hundred rolls, a fair part of them to get up after accidentally capsizing during technique training, and didn't miss a single one.

Build quality

In my initial review I wrote about the quality problems I encountered. There was a small leak into the front cargo space as well as larger leaks into the cockpit. It was resolved by the seller, but it is clear that the quality control failed on this particular kayak. According to Bear & Water, which has sold a good number of these, my kayak has been the only problematic one of the Aquarius composite kayaks, so I don't think any conclusions about the quality should be made based upon this single failure.

The lamination work itself seems good, but I'm sure the British kayaks with double the price are better. The bulkheads are made of foam instead of glass fiber, which I think is an acceptable compromise to keep the price down. The kayak is light, so it is clearly not as bombproof as some of the British kayaks weighing 6 kg more, though part of the weight savings comes from using carbon fibre and kevlar mats. It also seems like it is designed to give in a little when hitting a rock, as opposed to absolutely rock hard kayaks. The deck is solid during rescues, as opposed to some other light kayaks.

Conclusion

In my opinion the Aquarius Sea Lion is a very fun kayak that gives a lot of value for the money. It is a kayak that really rewards active paddling. An acquaintance of mine likened the Sea Lion LV to a Ferrari compared to the PE Nordkap kayak tested at the same occasion, and I would tend to agree that the same goes for the bigger version I have. The bigger and heavier expedition kayaks feel very boring compared to this one. The Sea Lion paddles well unloaded and still takes gear for a week-long trip. Anyone looking for an all-round kayak might want to take a look at it. For someone a little smaller than me it would be an even better choice.

Is this the kayak that I always will use in the future? I'm not sure. I think that for guiding I would like a more stable kayak, e.g. to be able to let go of the paddle in those 10 m/s and higher wind waves. I've even tested a Zegul Arrow Play HV that seems to fullfill that need, though it definitely is slower. Even if I were to buy another kayak, I don't think I will let go of the Sea Lion.

The last kayaking overnighter of the season - second attempt

This was supposed to be about the Mammoth March. About 25 hours of epic struggling, riding the bike on roads of different size, trails and non-trails and searching checkpoints over seemingly endless mires. Unfortunately, I was not well enough to participate. A persistent flu had me make the choice to opt out. It simply didn't make sense to start pushing myself far beyond the comfort zone when not being in perfect health. It was the sensible choice, but seeing the GPS tracking of my team mates Toni and Jarkko really had me wanting to be there. Ultimately they didn't make it to the finish. After almost 26 hours of struggling they decided to call it in.

While I wasn't well enough for the Mammoth March, a light kayaking overnighter was no problem. This was also the last weekend of the year with daylight saving in effect. After this the sun sets too early, making the dark evenings very long. As it turned out, Vigu course mates Anna and Louise were also going on a kayaking overnighter, so I joined them. Louise had started earlier, but Anna needed to sleep in, so she started with me from Granvik in the afternoon. It was a beautiful fall  day.

Soon after the start we had to help two Russian fishermen who had got lost. Since they just were on the wrong side of the island they needed to go to, it was easy to point them in the right direction. After this we continued paddling in the nice fall archipelago.




We had only one and a half hour of paddling to the island where Louise waited for us. Out arrival coincided with the sunset.

The place was a really nice one. During summer I would probably consider it a little too close (150 m) to a summer house, though it is in an area clearly separated from it.



It soon got darker.

The moon was almost full, which would have given a good light if not for the clouds approaching.

The dinner was nice. An excellent sallad with spinach, Roquefort, crème fraîche, walnuts and pears was followed with Pasta Carbonara.

For dessert I made a chocolate cake eaten with whipped cream, to celebrate that I now had paddled a full 1000 km this year in a sea kayak.

I went to sleep quite early. (My blue tent is colored yellow by a candle.)

I got up at 7:30 and turned the clock back one hour to 6:30. It was still dark, with about one hour to sunrise. Eventually it got light enough to take some pictures and I took a stroll around the vicinity. The girls were still sleeping in their tent.




After breakfast we started packing our kayaks. The wind was clearly picking up now, though it didn't reach the forecasted 9-10 m/s.

We started paddling again around 9:15.


We had a nice tail wind, but the waves weren't big enough for anything else than an occasional surf.

That's it. A nice overnighter in good company and possibly the last kayaking overnighter of the year.

Fall break

The kids had fall break from school and I also had the opportunity to take a day off, so on Thursday afternoon we drove northwards. The wife dropped off at her former home to meet up with some friends, but I continued to Vaasa with the kids. The next morning my brother would take the kids by boat to his cabin at an island in the outer archipelago, while I chose to take the kayak. The weather was the brilliant, the best one can get during fall.

The water was almost 30 cm below normal, so I expected to get some new scratches in the kayak.

I'm trying to get used to a normal paddle for the winter. The paddle is a nice and light carbon fibre thing, but I really do like my Greenland paddle a lot more. Unfortunately, my fingers were too cold with the Greenland paddle the entire last winter, so I'm trying a paddle that allows using pogies.

The stove was on mainly to dry the cabin.

After lunch and coffee it was time to take a walk around the island in the splendid fall weather.

Low water indeed.



This small skerry with the characteristic rowan tree (I assume) has looked the same for as long as I can remember, which is almost forty years.




During the summer the island is full of birds, but now there is almost nothing left.


The cairn is not marked on any maps or sea charts.

The air was exceptionally clear. I've never before seen Storskär, 25 km away, from there, but in that direction there isn't anything else before Sweden, another 100 km to the west. It should be well under the horizon, though, but some optical phenomenon lifted it up.

Only some bones remaining of a moose.


Only very few remaining flower, in this case a tansy.

And then the sunset came.






Then it was time for dinner and to relax in the cozy cabin.



The sunrise was about half past eight in the morning.


After breakfast it was time for the cranberries, of which there were unusually much.




After lunch it was time to turn back. It was a short, but intensely nice, visit to the island.
